OBS IS THE NUMBA WAN OPEN SOURCE SOFTWARE FOR SCREEN RECORDING. IT IS NUMBA WAN, BECAUSE IT IS OPEN SOURCE. THAT MEANS THERE IS A COMMUNITY OF DEVELOPERS MAKING IT BETTER EVERY DAY, AND IT IS NOT DIRECTLY OWNED BY A CORPORATION.

DOWNLOAD AND INSTALL OBS.

SELECT THE OPTION TO OPTIMIZE FOR RECORDING.

WHEN YOU ARE RECORDING, MAKE SURE EVERYTHING IS SET TO 1920×1080 pixels resolution, that should also be your screen resolution, and then that matches the 1080p screen size, which is going to be the quality we want to record.

Make sure to set the audio to at at least 160kbps bitrate, and up to 320kbps for the best quality.

Add a browser source, and link it to your web browser. This is why it is nice to have multiple browsers.

I DO NOT RECORD DESKTOP AUDIO, AND I DO NOT RECORD MY ENTIRE SCREEN. THIS IS FOR PRIVACY AND SECURITY PURPOSES. Recording the specific program, such as the browser, or another software application window directly, is most certainly the best option. Also, if you are using desktop audio, then you’ll get any pc system alert sounds and notifications and popups on your recording, which are usually not wanted.

Connect the browser source to the browser you are using, and open the live stream at full window screen so you have it playing on full screen. Now, you can use the ALT+TAB keyboard shortcut to switch programs, while keeping the browser still playing at full screen. If you are on a mac, it will be the COMMAND+TAB keyboard shortcut.

Make sure that the OBS browser source is set to 1920x1080px when you open the properties by double clicking on the browser source name.

Select the Capture Audio (beta) option on the browser properties pop up. It is a checkbox. Also, uncheck the Capture Cursor button, unless, you want that. But I don’t want my mouse being on my final recording video output file.

Ok ok, now under file > settings, and then the OUTPUT tab…

  • Do not adjust the video encoder unless you are having lag/program/recording issues, then I have had success with both the NVENC option or QuickSync H.264 option. For now, leave it at the default option that it pre-selected. If you have any issues, then you can revisit this and test for various performance optimizations, but it is going to be a different option that works best for each pc/mac computer.
  • FOR THE ENCODER SETTINGS…
    • I like to use VBR
    • bitrate, anything over 2500 if you are trying to save on file space on your hdd for your recording files, or set it up to 4 or 5 thousand or more if you want the best quality. I do not think there is much advantage to anything over 4,000kbps bitrate because the live feed quality is only going to be so good anyways, as the source broadcast from the streamer is usually less than 5000kbps to begin with. So, in hindsight, you cannot increase the quality of a source video that you are trying to screen record.
    • For the max bitrate, use 3000 or up to 5000 if you want to have the best quality and are not concerned about file storage of videos. The higher the bitrate, the larger the video file will be.
    • RECOMMENDED BITRATE: 3,000kbps and then max bitrate 4500kbps
    • OR, if you have any issues, just set it to CBR which is Constant Bit Rate instead of variable.
    • preset, use whatever your pc can handle, start at best quality, and work your way down if you have any issues. Medium quality is fine though. Leave this at whatever is pre-selected by default for now.
    • Tuning, leave this as default.
    • Multipass mode, I use single pass.
    • Profile, I use high. 420, dude. Gotta keep it lit.
    • Look ahead, and the tuning checkbox, leave as the defaults.
    • GPU, leave as default.
    • Max B-Frames, leave as default.
    • BACK AT THE TOP OF THE OPTIONS, make sure rescale output is disabled and confirm that you are on 1920×1080, and just to cover all the options, the audio encoder, leave as the default for now, too.
    • UNDER THE RECORDING TAB: type, use standard.
    • Set your recording path to your external hdd if you have wan!
    • Keep the format to mkv, that is the best, and preferred over mp4 because if anything happens to your computer or OBS software while you are recording and the computer or the software crashes it will not corrupt the file if it is mkv, so keep it as mkv.
    • Video encoder, use stream encoder, that’s where we set all of the recording options on the main stream output tab.
    • And then, I like to split my recording file, and then combine them later if needed.
    • If you plan to record for longer than a few hours continuously, the file splitting feature is nice to have, because it makes opening the video files faster and easier than if it is all in one megaunit file.
    • On the audio tab, I record at 320 on all tracks.
    • For the replay buffer, I’ll have to cover that in CLIPPER NOTE NUMBA WAN.2 because it is a really useful tool to have.

HOPE THAT HELPS
